The de Havilland Vampire was the first jet aircraft to be landed on an aircraft carrier. Early trials carried-out by Captain Eric Winkle Brown showed that landing jet aircraft aboard carriers was a lot more dangerous than landing piston aircraft on carriers, as earlier jet engines took a lot longer to spool-up when compared with piston engines, that could provide instantaneous power and the ability to wave off if unhappy with an approach. Ever wondered what happened to Tamworth's Vampire Jet? Well it's down but not out. For 41 years the De Havilland Vampire jet stood on a plinth in Hands of Fame Park. You might recall it there on the left hand side as you cross the Peel River bridge heading into the CBD?.
