But you don’t get more mainstream than Superman. And let’s face it, unless Christopher Reeve is in the suit, the rock-jawed Man of Steel can be a bit of a bore. Much of the fun and frustration of Gunn’s movie is seeing how he stretches and strains to make Superman, you know, interesting.

Some fans have long thought of Superman as an immigrant character, as his displacement from his fictional home planet to the United States is a key part of his story.

During post-production on Superman, writer-director James Gunn ran into a problem. “We found that people loved the movie but that they were confused about the world they were entering,” Gunn told io9 recently. And so, to fix that problem, late in the filmmaking process, he looked to another one of his favorite films for the fix.
