AI companies risk losing control of AI systems and shouldn’t wait for governments to regulate the technology, OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman has said.

Satya Nadella urged the AI industry to prioritize safety and maintain human control over the technology.

Microsoft has drafted a “Humanist AI” code requiring future models to accept human shutdown, follow non-negotiable safety rules, and remain under control.

In response to a growing AI and screentime backlash, Microsoft announced last week it had agreed to adopt guardrails and privacy standards for its AI in schools, as negotiated with the American Federation of Teachers, the country’s second-largest teachers union.

Microsoft wants to be seen as a responsible AI entity as it ramps up model development alongside partners Anthropic and OpenAI.

The announcement comes as organizations across the UAE rapidly expand their use of agentic AI, creating a growing need for stronger visibility, governance and security. As agents gain greater access to enterprise data, applications and systems, that governance gap becomes increasingly consequential.
