CLEVELAND, Ohio — If you were building a script for the most unlikely hero of Cleveland’s stretch run, you probably wouldn’t start with Petey Halpin. The rookie outfielder had just two career hits against left-handed pitching in 41 plate appearances heading into Wednesday’s series finale against Chicago.

Petey Halpin backpedaled a few steps and watched the drive off his bat sail deep to right field. As Progressive Field roared around him, the 24-year-old tossed his bat aside and stared at the Guardians’ third-base dugout before he began to hop-step backwards toward first base.

This week’s series victory was a massive step toward a third straight division title for Cleveland, but the division title and potentially a first-round bye are still up for grabs.
