Colorado's second-highest court ruled on Thursday that counties lack standing to challenge a 2023 state law restricting their ability to contract with the federal government or private entities for immigration detention purposes.

Colorado is currently gripped by a political struggle between the governor plus the state legislature in Denver and populous “home-rule” city governments, mainly on the Front Range, such as Colorado Springs.

Twenty state laws passed during Colorado’s 2025 legislative session will take effect on Thursday, January 1. The new policies range from regulations on food trucks and firearm sellers to insurance coverage for abortion and mental health services.
