Melissa becomes powerful post-tropical cyclone in Atlantic, NHC says
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Cuba early Wednesday as a Category 3 storm, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm made landfall near Santiago de Cuba with winds near 120 mph. Melissa is moving quickly away from Bermuda and is expected to become an extratropical cyclone later today.
Forecasters warned residents of Jamaica to "seek shelter now," as Melissa, a Category 5 hurricane, neared landfall on the Caribbean island nation early Monday.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has yet to indicate that it is monitoring a significant storm forming along the East Coast, and AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jon Porter warned that delaying giving the storm a name could make it "too late" to save lives and property once it arrives.
