ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Many Western New Yorkers will be faced with multiple precipitation types this week, including freezing rain and sleet. But, what exactly are they? Winter precipitation types vary based on the atmospheric temperature profile (what the temperature is as altitude increases).

A powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy wet snow, freezing rain, mixed precipitation and strong winds to the Northland from Tuesday evening to Thursday morning.

At least 13 states were facing winter weather conditions on Wednesday, including heavy snow and freezing rain.
