Microsoft published a draft code of conduct for its in-house AI models, barring them from resisting shutdown or hiding their reasoning — as Anthropic, OpenAI and Elon Musk call for slowing AI development.

As the artificial intelligence industry weighs a slowdown, Microsoft published its own guardrails to try to ease fears about the technology.

Microsoft’s AI code of conduct makes it clear that “people matter more than AI,” and that AI models are not conscious and “should not be designed to imitate consciousness.” Microsoft also rejects “the pursuit of legal personhood, or the idea that models might deserve welfare, or be entitled to rights.”

Microsoft says it will no longer use student data to train AI systems and will ban features that "foster emotional attachment."

Microsoft wants to be seen as a responsible AI entity as it ramps up model development alongside partners Anthropic and OpenAI.

Millions of students every day turn to AI chatbots for help with schoolwork, emotional support and personal advice — often unaware of where their conversations and other personal information end up.

In an interview with Fortune, Mustafa Suleyman said coordination between labs would mean disclosing how capable companies' models are to third parties.
