Photos of President Trump reviewing a poster board with the title “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED” spurred the largest gathering yet in support of the performing arts institution.

The “Hands Off the Arts” demonstration was held in response to Trump’s threats to demolish the Kennedy Center and his push to put his name on it.

The Kennedy Center has been in disarray since the start of Trump’s second term, when he declared himself the center’s chairman and made the board only hand-picked loyalists. But ticket sales plummeted, and artists fled from scheduled events.

A large crowd of demonstrators gathered outside the Kennedy Center to oppose President Trump’s efforts to shut down the institution and remake it in his image.
